Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)
Airport Information
(Gran Canaria, Spain)
Housed in a single building, Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is a busy facility which divides its operations into three zones, each dealing with a different category of flight. With flights operating to a large number of domestic, EU and international cities, the two runways are capable of handling up to 53 take-offs and landings per hour.
Generally enjoying perfect weather conditions for most of the year, Gran Canaria Airport has grown to become the biggest and most important gateway into the famed Canary Islands, serving in excess of 10.5 million passengers annually. The airport is situated around 18 km / 11 miles south of the island's capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, while both El Burrero and the Playa de Ojos de Garza are close by.
Located next to the GC-1 motorway (Autovia Las Palmas-Puerto Rico), Gran Canaria Airport is linked to Sant Telmo station at Las Palmas by regular public buses, along with many other locations, such as La Laja Beach, the Playa del Aguila beach, La Ciel shopping centre, Santa Isabel park and Faro de Maspalomas.
There are countless taxis, commercial shuttles and hotel shuttles also available, with the centrally located Parque San Telmo, within Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, being a particularly popular destination for many holidaymakers, along with the Parque Santa Catalina, Playa del Inglés and Puerto de Mogán. A number of major car rental companies are represented at the airport, as well as some domestic companies, such as Auto Reisen.
About Gran Canaria Tourism
Gran Canaria is the most popular island in Spain's famous Canaries, offering year-round good weather, as well as golden sandy beaches and diverse scenery. Popular resorts with young people include Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas, where the daylight hours are relaxing and the nightlife is vibrant. Playa del Inglés is also known for being a popular gay centre. The annual February carnival at Las Palmas is one of the town's biggest draw cards and many people plan their Gran Canaria holidays to coincide with this colourful extravaganza, although the summer holiday months of July and August remain the most popular time to visit, forming the peak season.
Close to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), the city of Las Palmas is one of the most popular areas to stay and it offers a wealth of tourist amenities and popular beaches, such as Playa de Las Canteras and Playa de Las Alcaravaneras. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also worth visiting for its appealing Old Quarter, where the 15th-century Catedral de Santa Ana is a definite highlight.
