Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is situated midway along the east coast of Gran Canaria and is served by the GC-1 motorway, which runs from the north to the south of the island. Many visitors to Gran Canaria opt for rental cars to make getting around more convenient. There is no real advantage to transporting your own vehicle to Gran Canaria by ferry, as car rental rates are notably cheaper than the costs incurred by this.

A good selection of car rental agencies can be found both at Gran Canaria Airport and at the main resorts, particularly around Las Palmas on the north-eastern side of the island, the Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés areas on the southern coast, and both Telde and San Bartolomé on the eastern side. All of the main resorts are well connected by roads and are within easy driving distance of each other.

When hiring a car at Gran Canaria Airport, you must be at least 21 years old and have held a full driving licence for two years or more. Any foreign driving licences must be shown together with an International Driving Permit. Fuel on the island is all lead-free and particularly cheap, being free of taxes. Driving around even the island's biggest cities, such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is relatively straightforward, although it can be busy at times. However, parking is often not so easy, with meter parking and pay car parks in Las Palmas quickly filling up.
