Gran Canaria: City Hotels and Accommodation
Las Palmas is the island's bustling capital and is located around 18 km / 11 miles north of Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). Located on the far north-eastern coast, Las Palmas is home to plenty of sightseeing opportunities and a mixture of accommodation options, ranging from high-rise beachfront hotels to rural houses (casas rurales) nearby.
There are around 200 large hotels located all over the island of Gran Canaria and most are quick to fill up during the sunny summer months. Also worth noting are the various festivals which take place every year, including the February Carnaval, the Fiesta de San Juan and Corpus Christi each June, and the Romeria de Nuestra Senora de la Luz in October, which is better known as the 'Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Light'. These festivals often attract large crowds, many of which are looking to stay in the area and as a result, vacant hotel rooms can become scarce and should always be booked ahead.
Many of the best hotels in the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria area are located around Santa Catalina Beach and the harbour, overlooking the coastline and just a short walk to the waterfront. Further accommodation can be found in the towns and villages of Arucas, Gáladar, Ingenio, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucia de Tirajana, Santa Maria de Guia, Temisas and Teror.
Particularly noteworthy are the hotels around Maspalomas and the Playa del Inglés, a lively area of Gran Canaria known for its nightlife and literally hundreds of bars and restaurants. Also worthy of a mention is Telde, the second-largest city on Gran Canaria, sited close to Las Palmas and featuring a range of accommodation, historic buildings and a 15th-century basilica.
